I Miss Flannel.

I was just looking at this article, and the picture of The Replacements (it’s the third one) made me suddenly, viscerally nostalgic for the late 80s and early 90s. Yay crazy button-down shirts with tshirts underneath, yay flannel, yay post-mullet haircuts growing out. It was a simpler time. Bush was in the white house, some people were protesting a war in the middle east but mostly no one cared…

Ok, nevermind.*

The Replacements were a fun band. Any band that would name a song “Kiss Me On the Bus” and have it intentionally not be dirty, but instead sort of innocently horny, is a-ok. But the more important thing here is that I still have one flannel from high school, and if it weren’t 95 degrees here, I would go put it on, just because.

*I was going put something here like “Or should I say, ‘Oh well whatever nevermind.’” and then reflect cynically about Kurt Cobain’s wordsmithing. But it was kind of a stupid reference, since mostly I’m thinking about pre-grunge new wave sort of stuff. But it’s still a valid snark: Kurt Cobain’s lyrics were ok, but not great. It’s interesting that with the passing of time, his death is considered significant because of his impact on the music of the time and pop culture, but not necessarily because he was such a great musician. As it should be.

I had lots of flannel/t-shirt combos in high school. Then again, I also had colored rubber bands on my braces because I thought they were cool. Turns out, they just made me look like I had food in my teeth.
