Let Me Tell You About My Friend…

One day when I was in high school, I went to a friend’s home for lunch. On the way, she started telling me about a friend of hers I should meet, a friend named Jesus. I awkwardly but politely told her that I was comfortable with my spirituality. Then we had some sandwiches.

That has nothing to do with with what I sat down to write; it just popped into my head when I typed in the title for this post.

I want to tell you about my friend Waffle Lady. (There is a link to her blog over there to the right.) Last week I was sitting on my couch sick, unemployed, and feeling just a little sorry for myself, when I read this. She has a funny way of doing that: sometimes, even when we haven’t spoken for weeks or months, she pops in at just the right time with something perfect. I’ve known her for almost twelve years, through college and the bumpy times after college, a marriage, divorce, and a dozen moves for me, a marriage, kid, and a blossoming career for her, and all the stuff that happened in between.

One of the coolest things about Waffle Lady is that she does things her own way -there is NO telling her what to do and how to live her life- yet she somehow does it in a way that is approachable and draws people in. That’s a hell of a thing to pull off.

Back on that day at the Subway in Owings Mills I told her that she was going to be a great mom, and look! I was right! It’s been so much fun watching her grow into being a mom. I’ve said it before: Jr. is one lucky kid. He’s got a mom who is smart, loving, independent, and one of the strongest women I know (and not just because he was ten pounds and nearly two feet tall when she gave birth to him- she’s strong for all the other reasons, too).

What more could I want from a friend? I love the choices you’ve made in your life, and I’m honored to have been a part of it all. Thanks, Waffle Lady! Here’s to the next twelve years!
