The pledge of allegiance is really weird. This is not a political missive, I just think it’s strange to offer one’s devotion and fidelity to a flag. It’s halfway through the thing that we actually get to what it’s about, the republic for which it stands. Why not just pledge one’s allegiance directly to that? It’s sort of like the traditional marriage vows going, “I, bride, take this mustache to be my lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, and the man with the lip upon which it sits, until death us do part.”
Ok, I get it, the power of symbols and all – but it’s still weird.
