I am surprised that I have been here almost two years and just found WRNR. As much I enjoy classic rock stations* -I feel like a dinosaur admitting that I actually listen to the radio – I have been thinking that it would be nice to have something else. Lo and behold, WRNR, a radio station which can be described most succinctly as radio for the aging former 120-Minutes-watching, combat-boot-wearing set who, it turns out, can handle hearing two or three new things per hour.
The line-up breaks down to four categories, and several subcategories.
1. I loved this song in high school / college!
a. I can’t believe I’m actually hearing this on the radio! Whoa!
b. Huh. This song actually sucks, but I know all of the words, so yay!
2. I barely tolerated this song in high school / college, but for some reason I know all of the words, so yay!
a. This song is actually pretty good, although I hated it back then. Maybe I just didn’t like the other people who liked the band? And why do I know all of the words to this? Crap. I just missed my exit.
b. Oh my god, this is still pretty terrible.
3. This new, and doesn’t make me want to take my ears off!
a. Interesting. I wouldn’t buy the album, but now I can have a conversation with my younger cousins.
b. I will consider buying the album, until I go home, google the band, and realize that I have shoes older than the lead singer.
4. This is new, and I have to keep it on long enough to find out the name of the band so I can make sure I never EVER accidentally listen to them again. My god, this is unlistenable. Kids today.
a. Ok, to be fair, Sonic Youth. And Radiohead.
b. What the hell is with the legions of songs with verses that follow this exact format?
Melody line, sung by guy who sounds like he left his lunch on the bus:
Blah blah blah blah blah blah
Blah blah blah blah [FALSETTO]blah [MUMBLED] blah blah
The point of all of this is that today I was driving to class, tired beyond all get out, cranky, and annoyed, when suddenly Punk Rock Girl came on, and I still knew all the words, and that made everything all better.
*I am still rattled when I hear REM, the Ramones, and the Talking Heads on “classic rock” stations. Good heavens.
