It took me less than ten minutes to decide to buy my car. It took about the same to decide to buy the house. But picking out a conditioner in the health and beauty aisle at Whole Foods today turned into a half-hour ordeal in which I examined themes of consumerism, corporate ethics, ideas about beauty and self-worth, the foundations for satisfying personal relationships, man versus nature, man’s inhumanity to man, and man’s search for meaning in accordance with divine will.
