A friend from college posted this status on facebook:
*Friend* is wondering what shot best accompanies a pina coldada. [sic]
Upon reading this status, I was reminded of the flaming aluminum crankcase. I hadn’t thought of it since 1997 or so, but the story went like this: one night we were out to see Spider Kelly, and Eric told the story of his truck breaking down at an inopportune time – a breakdown which included parts of the truck catching on fire. In honor of the event, one of his friends at the bar created a shot called the flaming aluminum crankcase, which was a layered shot of rum, yaeger, and sambuca, with the sambuca set on fire.
This also reminded me of the game “flaming finger.*” In flaming finger, a bunch of people had shots in front of them, and one person would dip his finger in his shot, hold a lighter to his finger until it caught on fire, pass the flame to the next person’s alcohol soaked finger, douse the flame, and do the shot. This continued around the circle until the shots were gone. We were dumb in college.
*In retrospect, my roommate Bill probably made this up.
