This morning I was talking with a fellow yoga teacher, whose neighbor is a regular in one of my classes. In passing she mentioned that her neighbor has been to lots of classes, but she seems to get the most out of mine.
In a way, I can’t believe this is possible. But, of course it’s possible. Making an impact on people takes some getting used to. Every so often I’ll get an email from some one I knew from way back when telling me I’m so great and that’s way cool, but the idea of bringing something to other people in this very definable way, again and again, is still surprising.
The thing is, what I do isn’t that special. I mean, it is: the practice is amazing and useful. But it’s not: I’m just transmitting information, with my own little spin on it. When students get something great out of my class, it’s because they’re there, they’re focused, and open. It’s available at any time. I am happy to shuffle folks along that process. I’m kind of like a web browser. Some teachers are Firefox and some teachers are Internet Explorer, but where a student goes once we’re running is up to them.
I am sure there is an extended metaphor here about web standards -maybe Yoga Alliance is the W3C- but I think I’ve made my point.
