The Value of a Good Buttkicking

I was having a rough day yesterday – mopey, out of sorts, and feeling like my life wasn’t making much sense. At some point in the afternoon it occurred to me that I probably had some things to work out on the mat. I went to a nice hot, sweaty vinyasa class in the evening, hoping for a great release, but mostly felt like I had never done yoga, ever. I was sliding off my mat, falling out of postures, and getting lost in the sequence. Then I came home and finished the Secret post. I guess it worked.

Today was much better, and as it has often been the case lately, what I really wanted was a crazy, ridiculous, sweaty power class, one of those that requires complete surrender, and just goes and goes until absolutely everything wears out. Thanks to Camille (and to parking myself under one of the heaters, and to one of the other students who, before class said “I want to be in pain,”), that was just what I got, and in perfect contrast to last night, it was probably one of the strongest practices I’ve ever had.

Since the Spring, the crazy, ridiculous intensity has been where it’s at for me. A couple months of Bikram, then finding my way into classes with teachers who have power yoga training and inclinations… it is so interesting how what I need from the practice changes over time. I’m starting to get fascinated by the power of surrender, and how much can be accomplished by just giving up.

I wonder what my teaching will be like tomorrow. Regardless, I will be heading to Borders after class to see what I can find from the power yoga luminaries.
