Not To Put Too Fine A Point On It

They Might Be Giants’ Flood was one of those massively formative albums for me – silly, weird, accordion-centric, and out of the mainstream. I bought it on a bike trip to New Hope just before I turned fifteen, and twenty years later They are still my favorite band. (And I still have a massive crush on 80s – 90s John Flansburgh.)

I was listening to Flood this morning (in the past week, three people from different parts of my life have posted facebook statuses with TMBG lyrics from the first couple of albums) and when the Theme got to the line “it’s a brand new record for 1990,” it occurred to me that yes, 1990 was twenty years ago, and wowee, passage of time and all that.

I think I may have to get myself a pair of Chuck Taylors and do the Birdhouse in Your Soul dance a lot this year in celebration.

  1. Mein Gott!

I always wanted to produce a music video for “Birdhouse” involving a nightlight that becomes an animated bluebird (like one of those Disney birds from Snow White) flying around a child’s room singing him the song.

btw, one of my fondest memories of TMBG music was when my six-year old daughter was able to sing all the words to “Kiss Me, Son of God” to her religiously-inclined aunt.
