Ride

It’s barely fifteen minutes into the new day, new year, new decade, and I swear, I feel like the sun is going to come up any second.

I spent the last half hour of the year playing with tarot cards and freaking myself out. I got to CNN’s website just in time to miss the ball dropping in New York (a twenty second commercial threw me off!). So, I heard the end of Auld Lang Syne, which always makes me cry, woke up Scott to say “happy new year,” listened to my own recording of Auld Lang Syne (the Guy Lombardo version), then “Ride,” by Robyn Hitchcock.

Now I am listening to fireworks in the neighborhood and dogs barking, thinking about lost loves, and how time just keeps moving faster. Though I might sound a little melancholy -because I get this way at New Year’s- life is really thrilling.

Ride

You don’t have to go anywhere
You don’t have to see anyone
All you gotta do in this world
Is ride
All you gotta do is ride

It’s the end of a long, hard decade
And before the next long, hard decade
By the end of which a billion creatures yet unborn
Will die
All you gotta do is ride

Love me love me love me love me love me
That’s what all the papers say (But they used to be trees)
Hold me hold me hold me hold me hold me
Please don’t let me get away

But if you don’t love yourself
What’s the use in someone else
Loving you?

You don’t have to sharpen yourself
You’re embedded deep as it is
All you’ve gotta do in this world
Is ride
All you gotta do is ride

You don’t have to worship the chair
You don’t have to sleep with a judge
All you’ve gotta do in this world
Is ride
All you gotta do is ride

Love me love me love me love me love me
That’s what everybody say (Everybody but me)
Hold me hold me hold me hold me hold me
Please don’t let me get away

But if you don’t love yourself
What’s the use of someone else
Loving you?
But if you don’t love yourself
What’s the use of someone else
Loving you?

So put down your hands
Pick up your head
And ride

Sittin’ in a carriage in the pouring rain
In Swindon
With an anorak

Better ride on home
Better ride on home
Better ride on home
Better ride on home

I don’t know that song, which is unfortunate. I do, however, have the chorus of “Ride Around Sally” in my head now (“…riiiiide, Sa-ally, riiiiiiide…”). Thanks for that.

Now that I think about it, it should be more like “Sal-ly”. Poor onomatopoeia – if that’s even what that is. (Pronouns were three for a buck at Wal-Mart today.)

    D’oh. Sorry about that.
