I finished my web design certificate last night. Briefly, this is what I learned in the certificate program:
1. I am a bad designer. I can lay out a site so it is functional and makes sense, but I am really not a good designer at all. That said, I like knowing stuff about designing websites a lot, and I think I can accept not being good at something I like. But just this one something. OK, and dancing. I am bad at design and dancing. But that’s it.
2. Photoshop is a wonderful gift from a benevolent and geeky god. It turns out that while I may not be good at the other stuff, I am pretty darned good at repairing photos, and I like it. Painstaking, detail-oriented, maddening work is the work for me. See? And these are from a year ago – I’ve gotten much better since then.
3. Unless that painstaking, detail-oriented, maddening work is programming. I do not have a programmer brain. But I do have jQuery, which can make any non-programmer feel like a rock star.
4. CCBC gives me indigestion. Every dang class this semester I felt awful, and it went away as soon as I drove out of the lot. I don’t think it was the class, though. It was pretty low-key. More likely it was the grubby computer lab keyboards. *shudder*
