Onward, Upward, and Acrossword
Today began a frenzy of job applications. After one scam on craigslist, some painful moments composing cover letters, and a long walk during which I lamented the potential end of my time working (mostly) at home, I was reminded of an acrostic I wrote in college:
Every time a person
Asks me
To work harder I
Mention that
Even god [...]
Now You See It, Now You Don’t, Oh, wait. Maybe you do.
I learned three important things this week (and it’s only Thursday):
1. If I change a post from public to private, or if I delete a post after google reader has gotten hold of it, it is pretty much out there forever. Embarrassing. So, if you happen to be one of the very few people who [...]
SoCal WNY
I bought Mortal City by Dar Williams years ago, and I have always liked the album. Recently, I added “Southern California Wants to be Western New York,” to one of my yoga playlists – it was never a favorite, but it fits in nicely. After class today, it was stuck in my head so I [...]
Misc. Fall
Over nineteen days I plowed through all seven of the Harry Potter books, averaging 220 pages per day. I think the last four were all last week, which partly explains the radio silence. Distance = Rate x Time
There have been many years since the end of my meager marriage that I didn’t even notice the anniversary date pass. This is not one of those years. I’m not sure if that is what has me in a mood today (and yesterday, and all of last week) or what. It’s not that I have [...]
Memories
A friend from college posted this status on facebook:
*Friend* is wondering what shot best accompanies a pina coldada. [sic]
Upon reading this status, I was reminded of the flaming aluminum crankcase. I hadn’t thought of it since 1997 or so, but the story went like this: one night we were out to see Spider Kelly, and [...]
Behold, the power of cookies.
The fortune cookie I got on Saturday night says it all:
Which reminds me – my other favorite fortune, which I have been carrying around for probably fifteen years (and it has come true many times over):
Overheard
Three Conversations Between Mothers and Daughters
Overheard by me, in a department store, standing near a woman and her teenage daughter, both with heavy Jamaican accents:
Daughter: (pointing at a shirt) I wan’ dis one!
Mother: I don’ tink dis wil accomodate yah boobs.
Overheard by my mom, from a public restroom stall in Annapolis:
Mother: Emma. Empty your bladder.
Daughter: [...]
Breaking Up is Hard to Do
I have been meaning to delete my old myspace profile, but just haven’t gotten around to it. Then this happened:
On one hand, hilarious. On the other hand, leave me alone.
